#33 Remote Control (Part 1/4)
Pause
This is part 1 of a series highlighting ideas from the book EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence by Justin Bariso
Our ability to direct our thoughts is like the controls on a remote control.
Before acting upon our emotions we can take the time to either pause, mute, record or fast forward.
In this post we will focus on the “pause button”. In subsequent posts we’ll look at “mute”, “record” and “fast forward”.
How can we pause?
Take the time to think before saying or doing anything
If upset, count to ten before responding
If tempted to buy an unnecessary but wanted item, wait 24 hours
When angry, physically leave the situation; may be go for a walk
What next?
Try to intentionally practice the pause regularly.
Train yourself to become better at using your “emotions to work for you instead of against you”.
